On Tuesday afternoon, a group of job aspirants who had passed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) gathered in front of the School Service Commission (SSC) building in Salt Lake, demanding jobs in the upper primary level. However, they were unable to assemble at the designated location and instead sat on the road in front of the main gate of Vikas Bhavan.
The protest quickly drew the attention of the Bidhannagar police station, who arrived in heavy force and attempted to disperse the protesters. According to eyewitnesses, the police chased the protesters away from the area and forcibly arrested several of them. The TET pass candidates were dragged and taken to the police station.
Throughout the protest, the crowd of job aspirants moved from one location to another in an attempt to assert their demands, but were continuously pursued by the police. In the sweltering heat, the police struggled to control the protesters.
The TET job aspirants have been demanding jobs in the upper primary level for a while now. However, their demands have not been met and their frustration has boiled over into protests like the one that took place on Tuesday. The incident has raised concerns over the treatment of peaceful protests and the right to assemble in India.
